I was a former gutter installer. I would recommend that if you’re thinking of attaching gutter guard to 30 year old gutters … you should really think about replacing the gutters first. Considerations:
1. Gutters that old are probably held in place by spike/furrow … and probably into old fascia board … possibly rotting. More likely to fall out of place … and if made of galvanized … likely to be rotting or already rotted. (Check for leaks or brown spots.)
2. If your gutters are in good shape … and also made from aluminum or copper … you might be well off to do the gutter guard.
3. Gutter guard is a very expensive system. DO NOT go with the screen mesh, the plastic roll-in, etc. They make things worse. If you’re going to install gutter guard … buy the big name stuff and have someone install it. IMO … you’re better off to pay someone to clean them out once a year after the leaves fall.
(Wanted to respond to the above answer as well … STAY AWAY! … what happens is that you will get a leaf build-up on top of the mesh … this can take time … eventually this adds up and ‘collapses’ the mesh. What you then are dealing with is a large mass in the middle of the gutter … held in place by the mesh itself … far more of a blockage than you would have had without the mesh in the first place.)
